This Puts Your PhD's Worth of Sequencing to Shame

It's no small feat: Over the course of six months, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute sequenced more than 1 trillion DNA bases in six months, reports Genetic Future's Daniel MacArthur. At its current rate, he adds, Sanger is producing more sequence data every two minutes than was turned out by the whole community between 1982 and 1987. A third of the current data is for the 1,000 Genomes Project, which MacArthur says is "an important proving ground for the three major next-gen sequencing platforms on the market."
